* Shining Stars ================================== Congratulations to our newest Green Star Award certified businesses! Welcome to our new April Enrollees!
Green Events in May =================================
**NEW DATE** Support Anchorage’s Recycling Plan Tuesday, May 6, 6pm. The newly introduced recycling plan needs the support of the community to ensure acceptance by the Assembly. Come out to the Public Hearing for the plan at the Assembly chambers in the Loussac Library on April 29th at 5pm. To learn more about the plan, visit www.muni.org/sws/recycling.cfm. Total Reclaim’s Household Electronics Recycling Saturday, May 10, 10am 3pm, Romig Middle School, 2500 Minnesota Drive. Bring your household electronics, including computers, printers, TVs, stereos and much more, for recycling. A small fee per item will be charged. The Total Reclaim warehouse in the Huffman Business Park also will be open during the hours of this event, so you have two places to take electronics on Saturday. Visit www.greenstarinc.org/electronicsrecycling2008.php for fees, locations and other details. =================================
Green Star is once again teaming with Total Reclaim to offer easy, discounted electronics recycling opportunities for businesses in the month of June. So if you're a nonprofit organization or a Green Star Award certified business, start collecting up your electronics! Wednesday, June 4 -- Nonprofit Day Nonprofit organizations are invited to bring their waste electronics to Total Reclaim's warehouse on this day between the hours of 10am and 4pm. All qualifying nonprofits can recycle for just 10 cents per pound, rather than the full price of 35 cents per pound, thanks to a generous grant from the Rasmuson Foundation. The three-year grant currently allows Green Star to reimburse nonprofits 25 cents per pound until June 30, 2008. After that, nonprofits can receive 20 cents per pound back through the end of the grant period of June 30, 2009. Typically, nonprofits pay full price at Total Reclaim, then submit a reimbursement form with proof of nonprofit status to Green Star to receive a reimbursement, typically within a few weeks. On Nonprofit Day at Total Reclaim, qualifying nonprofits will simply pay the 10 cents per pound that Rasmuson does not cover, receiving the discount immediately. All nonprofit electronics will be charged by the pound at this event. For more information about the reimbursement program, visit www.greenstarinc.org/electronicsrecycling2008.php. Wednesday, June 11 -- Green Star Day Come out to Total Reclaim's warehouse between 10 am and 4pm on Green Star Day to enjoy free food, learn about recycling all sorts of materials, and see Total Reclaim receive its Green Star Award! On Green Star Day at Total Reclaim, Green Star Award certified businesses that bring materials to Total Reclaim can recycle for just 25 cents per pound -- a discount of 10 cents per pound off the standard 35 cent per pound fee. This is an additional discount of 5 cents over the standard 5 cents per pound discount that Green Star Award certified businesses already receive. All Green Star Award certified business electronics will be charged by the pound at this event. Visit www.greenstarinc.org/awardees.php for a list of current Green Star Awardees eligible for the discount. ================================= On Thursday, May 1, ALPAR (Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling) recognized outstanding achievements in recycling and litter prevention in Alaska in 2007 at its annual awards banquet held at O’Malleys on the Green. The banquet also celebrated the ALPAR's 25th anniversary. Recycling and Litter Prevention Award winners included many organizations and individuals that made an extra effort to make a difference in 2007.
Local artist Rebecca Lyon created the awards that were presented using recycled materials and found objects. ALPAR is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing economically viable recycling and eliminating litter in Alaska. ALPAR distributes free, bright yellow clean up bags to 200 Alaskan communities and organizations each summer, funds Youth Litter Patrols statewide and works "behind the scenes" to make recycling successful. The support of its member companies and other dedicated businesses throughout Alaska make ALPAR programs and services possible. =================================
Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 15. By promoting Bike to Work Day, the Municipality hopes to motivate commuters to leave their cars at home (for at least one day!), help reduce local traffic congestion, and improve air quality. In addition, the increased physical activity of biking to work means improved productivity, decreased rates of illness, reduced absenteeism, and lower health care costs. These all benefit employers as well as the employees. Need more information? Email us at biketowork@muni.org ================================= This year’s Creek Cleanup is scheduled for May 10th, the day BEFORE Mother’s Day! What a great gift to Mother Earth…to clean up the creeks, streams and lakes in Anchorage. On May 10th, from 9am to 12pm, there will be pick-up sites around Anchorage with bags, gloves, and maps to help everyone find trashy locations. After all your hard work, come celebrate at Valley of the Moon Park! Anchorage Waterways Council is hosting a free BBQ, with music, prizes and the coveted Trash Awards! Creek Cleanup Celebration at Valley of the Moon Park is a 100% RECYCLED EVENT. All tableware, cups, plates, and napkins are coming from Rare Earth and all the cans and bottles will be recycled in recycling bins provided by Green Star’s Green Events program. For more information, visit to www.anchoragecreeks.org. ================================= Alaska Wildland Adventures (AWA), a local tour company, is leading the way in environmental stewardship. AWA models its style of travel and business operations to reduce its impact on the environment. Staff members participate in recycling programs, minimize use of disposable materials and take great pride in educating guests on environmentally sound practices. Offices are stocked with earth-friendly and recycled products. AWA earned Green Star Award certification in 1992 and has maintained and built upon its award status ever since. AWA also embraces the award-winning Greenworks program and has lessened dependence on fossil fuels by implementing a hydroelectric system at its Kenai Backcountry Lodge. In addition to all of the changes the company has made within their day-to-day operations, they also donate 10% of pre-tax earnings to local environmental organizations working to conserve the areas they operate in. Most recently, AWA has taken yet another step toward sustainability by offsetting 100% of its fossil fuel dependent activities with Denali Green Tags. The company calculated and offset the carbon footprint of all of its locations and fleet vehicles by looking at annual electricity, natural gas, propane, diesel, and gasoline usage. Way to go AWA! For more information about Denali Green Tags, visit www.DenaliGreenTags.org. ================================= DOE announces the release of the ENERGY STAR Choose A Light Guide. The Guide is an interactive online tool designed to show consumers which CFL types are most appropriate for certain fixtures. The Guide also demonstrates the differences between soft white, bright white, and daylight color temperatures, and provides tips for proper CFL use. ================================= Green Star could not exist without the generous financial and in-kind support of many individuals and leading local businesses and organizations.
