Green Star will present a Green Star Award to Alaska Pacific University on March 10th at the Anchorage Chamber of Commerces Make It Monday forum. Faculty, staff, and students at Alaska Pacific University have been working to green the University in many different ways. As a learning institution, the University also strives to share information about its efforts and encourages everyone to participate.
One big initiative to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals was to switch the Universitys pool from traditional chlorine sanitizing to a salt system. This reduces the risk of chlorine exposure to students and staff, and reduces the side effects of chlorine use, such as itchy skin and irritated eyes.
APU has reduced its largest waste stream, which is paper, in several basic ways, including collecting one-sided mistake paper from copiers and using it in fax machines and printers. More high-tech paper reduction techniques include APUs Rural Alaska Native Adult program. This is a distance-learning program that uses web-based learning to earn a degree. All information is available on the web so no paper is used. Besides this program, many professors have lectures, notes, quizzes, and readings available on-line, and a few professors also offer students the option to buy textbooks on CD.
APU also has recently established a comprehensive recycling program on campus. The Universitys recycling committee manages the program and has set up bins to collect all of the materials currently accepted at the Anchorage Recycling Center. Committee members sort the materials as needed and deliver them to the center. The University also recently installed a cardboard recycling container.
The Green Star awards will be presented at the Chamber of Commerce Make It Monday forum beginning at noon at the 4th Avenue Theater.
